Corporate Citizenship

Horace Mann was founded almost 60 years ago on the premise that educators deserve good insurance rates. Today, our corporate culture is still one of “the educator first.” Horace Mann sponsors these programs and services to help educators during the school day and after the bell rings.

The Horace Mann Educator Scholarship Program

Established in 2002, this program provides $30,000 in scholarships annually for public and private school educators continuing their education. Horace Mann pays the scholarships directly to the college or university of each recipient's choice for tuition, fees and other educational expenses.

Educators can apply online at www.horacemann.com. Applicants must have at least two years of teaching experience.

www.reacheverychild.com

This free resource site, developed by award-winning educator Alan Haskvitz for his fellow educators, has lesson plans, links and other materials covering all grade levels and academic disciplines.

“Horace Mann is one of the few companies in the world really interested in helping educators both financially and with services,” Alan says. “Since I had been asked repeatedly during my two decades of teaching where I found the ideas and materials to create lessons in a variety of subject areas, I felt Horace Mann might be interested in us teaming together.”

Alan is pleased with the Web site’s development over its six-year history. “The results have included numerous Internet awards, a lot of positive feedback from teachers, and most importantly, help for educators at a steadily increasing rate,” he explains.

NEA Foundation Awards for Teaching Excellence

Horace Mann is a proud partner with the NEA and the NEA Foundation to recognize, reward and promote excellence in teaching. Members from across the country nominate their fellow members for the NEA Foundation Award for Teaching Excellence.

Horace Mann honors five outstanding educators chosen from NEA affiliate nominees at the annual NEA Foundation Salute to Excellence in Education Gala. The company awards each of the five finalists $10,000. One finalist receives the national NEA Foundation Award for Teaching Excellence and an additional $25,000 from the NEA and The NEA Foundation.

The Crystal Apple Award

This award recognizes the accomplishments and achievements of outstanding educators. Winners receive a “Crystal Apple” trophy engraved with their names. Local school or association leaders, working with their Horace Mann agent, customize this award program.

The Crystal Apple Program is designed to be flexible. Together, school or association leaders and Horace Mann representatives set the criteria for winning the award. That way, these leaders can reinforce the qualities they want most in their area’s educators. Recipient qualifications could include:

  • dedication;
  • assertiveness;
  • enthusiasm; and
  • use of creative and innovative techniques.

The program also allows school or association leaders to decide how award winners are chosen. Selection criteria could include:

  • voting by peers;
  • selection by school and/or association leaders;
  • nomination by a committee; or
  • selection by a Horace Mann representative based on information supplied by school or association leaders.

Three Lessons on Insurance. We've created a simple way to expand students' insurance knowledge with easy-to-follow teaching kit materials. All of the information can be found on our corporate Web site. Or, ask your agent to teach the class for you. He or she will bring along the accompanying video and handout materials.

The lesson plans include discussions of more traditional types of insurance (like home, auto and life) as well as more specialized insurance policies (including coverage for special events and historical artifacts).

The Abraham Lincoln Fellowship. Horace Mann sponsors the Abraham Lincoln Fellowship, a program designed to attract educators from across the country to the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum each year. The program recognizes 50 educators per year by providing them with a $1,000 fellowship, courtesy of Horace Mann, designed to cover all expenses related to their study of a curriculum created by the presidential library.

In addition to the fellowships, the company has awarded the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library Foundation a $100,000 grant and is working with the Foundation in the design and development of curriculum materials and the selection of Lincoln Fellows.

Educators from elementary, middle and high schools across the country are eligible to apply.
