Learning on the Fly...

Date published: Sunday, February 28, 2010

There is nothing like the start of a school day. When I was in school, I couldn’t wait to get off the bus and into school. I know not every student feels this way—but that doesn’t mean he or she can’t.

One of the main reasons I am studying to become an early childhood educator is because I want every child to love learning as much as I do. I know this is possible, as I see the joy my children have when they read or latch onto a new concept. I want to see this joy in all my students.

As I continue my studies, one thing is for certain: I will always be an active NEA member. This is an odd thing for me to write because I had never thought to become a student member of the NEA. I joined simply because of a state regulation requiring educators to have liability insurance before entering a classroom. I knew the NEA offered this insurance—what I didn’t know was what else they did. I learned quickly.

Even though I am only a student member, I am entitled to many of the same benefits as a full-time educator. As student teachers, we know how much it takes to help children achieve and that it goes way beyond traditional office hours and fixed budgets. Being a student member with a family, my funds are further limited. It is encouraging that the NEA recognizes this and offers personal support. I fully believe the NEA thinks of student members as the future of the organization.

For instance, I have my insurance through NEA Member Benefits. The rates for members on car and home insurance are so much better than competitors that I am able to save an incredible amount in my monthly budget. I also am able to get 18% off my phone bill and, when I shop for my family, the Target discounts always come in handy.

In addition to the personal support I receive, the NEA is there for me professionally. As I work toward certification, the NEA is there every step of the way to help with questions and professional development. I have found the professional development workshops to be incredibly beneficial. In addition, attending conventions with colleagues and swapping stories/best practices has shown me that there is a broad network of support for educators.

NEA Member Benefits also provides workshops on things like classroom management, how to step into the classroom on your first day, lesson plans, applying for grants, etc. I know I will be prepared to work with my students and help them succeed in their lives.

So far, I have loved every minute of my journey toward being an early childhood educator. Looking to the future, I am thankful that I’ll continue to have the support from the NEA, which will help me be the best educator I can be.
