Is Costa Rica calling you? How about Italy, Peru or another exotic location? NEA Member Benefits’ guided tours program, NEA Adventures, takes you inside the local culture and cuisine of these and other dream destinations!
If the beach is your usual go-to travel destination, why not change things up this year? How about a train trip to Machu Picchu that winds through the emerald green hills of Peru’s Sacred Valley? What if you could visit an organic coffee farm in Costa Rica, or take a private tour of the historic canals in Venice?
You can do any of these things and more in 2019 with NEA Adventures! Small-group tours (16 people maximum) are led by local guides who provide insider knowledge of their locales, as well as VIP access to selected museums, archaeological ruins, national parks, local villages, restaurants and more. Destinations include Alaska, Costa Rica, Iceland, Italy, Peru, Vietnam and the Western U.S. (Los Angeles to Las Vegas to San Francisco).
Tour prices and dates vary, giving you flexibility regarding your budget and travel dates. But, before we dig into the nitty-gritty of costs and scheduling, let’s talk about the fun stuff: the destinations you’ll explore, the adventures you’ll have, and the ways you can benefit personally and professionally from an NEA Adventures trip.
Educators and their guests can travel to Alaska, Costa Rica, Iceland, Italy, Peru, Vietnam and Western U.S. (Los Angeles to Las Vegas to San Francisco). Check out this slideshow for a special preview of what you’ll see and do in each location. The trips provide opportunities to explore both with a group or on your own.
In Costa Rica, guides will take the group on a private exploration of the Mi Cafecito Coffee Cooperative. You’ll also visit thermal hot springs and a volcano, and enjoy a guided tour of a forest preserve. During your free time, you can relax at the beach or follow a trail to a remote waterfall—all with help from your expert guide, who will give you directions to/from various sights and insider knowledge of the area.
Rome, Venice, Pisa and Lake Como are getaways to be explored in Italy. Peru attracts those interested in the magnificent green surroundings of the Sacred Valley, a train tour to Machu Picchu, shopping in Peruvian markets and 3 days exploring along the Amazon River.
Hike among glaciers and ice fields in Alaska. Visit the state’s greatest natural highlights including the imposing Harding Ice Field, the enchanting Kenai Fjords, the jaw-dropping Denali National Park and the charming town of Talkeetna. Explore the Western United States, basking in the lights and experiencing the culinary scenes of Los Angeles, Las Vegas and San Francisco, and enjoying nature with stops at the Grand Canyon, Death Valley and Yosemite National Parks.
Iceland offers close-ups of unparalleled natural wonders such as erupting geysers, whales and seals, glacial lagoons, breathtaking waterfalls and black sand beaches. When you visit Vietnam, sail through limestone karsts aboard a traditional junk boat and walk the streets of imperial capitals. Enjoy vibrant Hanoi, the natural beauty of Halong Bay, the ancient imperial capital of Hue, the charms of Hoi An and the modern day life of Saigon.
Among the many benefits of going on an NEA Adventures trip is your chief experience officer (CEO), who leads you to the best attractions in the area. Each trip offers several tour options, including museums, culinary excursions, hikes, city tours, boat trips and more, as well as ideas for activities to do on your own.
Locally based tour guides are not only knowledgeable about the areas they represent but are also well-connected, which means you get exclusive access to many attractions that other vacationers might not get to see. There’s often no waiting in line during an NEA Adventures trip. Guides in certain destinations take you straight to the front of the museum line! Guides are also available to help with any trip logistics, including arranging transportation and making restaurant reservations. (Read about other advantages of taking tour trips.)
Another benefit is flexibility in cost and dates. NEA Adventures are designed with educators in mind, and that’s why various price points and departure dates are offered so you can create a trip that aligns with your budget, interests and schedule.
Experiences that will pique your students’ curiosity
Itineraries are specially crafted to include time to engage with locals and communities. Doing so allows you the opportunity not only to support education, development and conservation programs in international locations but also to collect ideas, lessons and stories that you can share with your pupils. For example, you can create a slideshow of your trip and show your explorations to your students, or take videos of the communities you visited so students can see and hear how others live in different parts of the world. You’ll do it all while supporting local economies.
