Supporting Public Education

American Fidelity Assurance Company has been a longtime partner of NEA Member Benefits, underwriting the NEA Income Protection Insurance Plan since 1976. American Fidelity, which serves more than 1 million customers in 49 states and 23 countries, has specialized in the education, auto, healthcare and municipality industries since 1969. In addition to being a major sponsor of The NEA Foundation’s Annual Salute to Excellence in Education Gala for 18 years, American Fidelity is involved in several popular education initiatives in its home state of Oklahoma in partnership with the NBA’s Oklahoma City Thunder basketball team. The first is the “Read to Achieve” program, which has three components:

  • Reading Timeouts, where special guests including players, Thunder Girls, and Thunder broadcasters visit schools and other community sites to read to children and discuss the importance of reading and literacy to success later in life
  • the Rolling Thunder Book Bus, which travels to schools all over the OKC metro area to give out books to kids, many of whom have never owned a book before
  • and the Thunder Reading Challenge, in which K-3 students track their minutes reading and become eligible for monthly and overall program recognition

Another important activity is the “Thunder Teacher of the Game.” Each year, 41 district teachers and their guests are selected to experience an OKC Thunder game, to be seated two rows behind the Thunder bench and receiving special benefits including spotlight recognition during the game.

“My coverage with American Fidelity was a lifesaver for my family. I had to take 12 weeks off work for major surgery, and without my disability policy, there would not have been a way to do this. Thank you so much for the benefits we have!”

“I was a single grandmother with less-than-professional wages raising a grandchild, which caused me to look at ways to protect my family in the event of an accident. I am thankful for my Income Protection Insurance from American Fidelity.”
