California Casualty, the NEA Auto & Home Insurance carrier since 2000, is embarking on a new business model, refocusing as a smaller regional insurer. As a result, they will be discontinuing their services in all states except Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Oregon and Wyoming. There will be no disruption for NEA members who have current policies residing in these states.

NEA Member Benefits conducted an extensive search to find a replacement carrier with a nationwide footprint to continue to offer reliable insurance, competitive rates, a member discount along with great coverage and services for NEA members. Travelers emerged as the standout choice for NEA members. 

California Casualty will continue their services only in these states: Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Oregon and Wyoming.

For members residing in states where California Casualty is no longer offering coverage, policies will be non-renewed as of the policy expiration date, meaning coverage will remain in force for the remainder of members’ policy term. Members will receive notification from California Casualty approximately 75 to 100 days prior to their policy expiration date. However, members do not need to wait until their policy expiration date to request a quote and apply for or enroll into the new NEA^® Auto & Home Insurance Program through Travelers. Members will will receive a series of communications via email and/or mail:

• Official non-renewal regulatory letter from California Casualty.
• Consumer Reports notification letter from NEA Member Benefits.
• A replacement policy from Travelers for qualifying members OR potential quote options from other carriers through InsuraMatch, a wholly owned agency of Travelers.
• A series of follow-up emails and/or letters to ensure your questions are answered and payment is received for your new policy.
• If no response and no payment is received on the effective date of your new policy, Travelers will send you in the mail a cancellation notice for this Travelers policy.

• You will receive separate notifications if you have more than one Auto/Home California Casualty policy.

NEA Member Benefits is working with Travelers to provide members with a replacement policy for their expiring California Casualty [Auto/Home] policy as part of the new NEA^® Auto & Home Insurance Program. Please note your credit score will NOT be impacted by any of these requests.

As part of the process, Travelers will obtain consumer reports including a credit-based insurance score. These reports help Travelers underwrite and determine your potential policy premium. In the event you are not eligible for a Travelers policy, InsuraMatch LLC, a wholly owned agency of Travelers will seek to obtain quotes from other carriers and those carriers will obtain consumer reports, including a credit-based insurance score in an effort to place your policy. Please note your credit score will NOT be impacted by any of these requests.

Please complete the following steps to ensure you do not have a lapse in coverage if you have received your replacement policy from Travelers:

• Review your coverages, limits and deductibles and if you have no changes, sign all forms and supply all requested information within the 30 days of receipt of the policy.
• To accept the policy, please pay your premium when due.

• Confirm your paperless preference for added convenience of accessing your policy information.

• If you prefer, please mail your completed, signed documents in the postage-paid envelope provided with your policy package. Please note: mailing forms could require an additional 7-10 business days processing time.

• AM Best, a credit rating agency focused exclusively on the worldwide insurance industry, announced on June 29, 2023, that it has downgraded California Casualty’s Financial Strength Rating (FSR) to B (Fair) from B++ (Good).
• Some home insurance policyholders may be told by their mortgage companies that they will not accept California Casualty Home Insurance given their change in rating from B+ (Good) to B (Fair).

As required by law, California Casualty has made an informational withdrawal filing with the New Jersey Department of Banking and Insurance of their intent to withdraw from auto coverage in the State of New Jersey. Under this filing, it is proposed that all auto/home policies will be non-renewed over a twelve-month timeframe. Non-renewals may begin with expiration dates on or after January 1, 2024. You will also receive an official notice of non-renewal in the mail for your auto/home policy at least 60 days prior to your policy expiration date.
